Stewart and Olson, 1996
Payne Stewart lent his name and his eye to only a handful of courses. Working with Cal Olson, he took 250 acres of Fullerton ridge and routed a par 70 that gains and gives back elevation on nearly every hole.
The result is a course that measures short on paper and does not play short. A 134 slope on 6,510 yards tells you where the difficulty lives: in the angles, the wind and the greens.
There are five sets of tees, and they are genuinely different golf courses. From the tips the forced carries are real; from the forward tees the same holes reward a well-placed 180-yard drive.
The routing threads mature pines and three water features, all of it inside the Coyote Hills East Preserve — protected open space, which is why the wildlife is as much a part of a round here as the golf.

Water runs the entire right side and the fairway tilts toward it, so the safe line is further left than it looks. The green shelves back into the hillside; anything long is a downhill chip you will not enjoy. Play it as a three-shot par 4 when the wind is up.

One of three holes shaped by water, and the one that gets misclubbed most. It plays steeply downhill, which subtracts about a club, while the afternoon breeze quietly adds one back. Trust the number, not the picture.

A finishing hole with an audience. Water short of the green, the clubhouse terrace above and behind it, and a putting surface that runs away from the hillside. Two good swings finish the round; one bad one finishes the bet.
